Hidden Server Licenses: A Potentially Costly Landmine
By David Johnson
Using components in an application is a great way to increase productivity and
decrease costs. Components speed up delivery, reduce complexity and avoid
future maintenance issues in development projects. When considering components,
features, capabilities, licensing and cost are the foremost factors in making a
decision. That's why special attention must be paid to the fine print related
to server licenses.
Often, hidden deep in license agreements, many components require that the
application developer purchase server licenses for each server the application
is placed on. Some components even require distinct test server licenses. If
your application is likely to be used in multiple locations, placed on multiple
Web servers, or sold commercially, these license fees could add up to
significant unexpected expenses and administrative hassles.
Graphics Server Technologies tested requiring server licenses and the feedback
from developers was clear - they licenses are too expensive and a hassle. The
costs and administrative headaches can really add up which is silly, the whole
point of using a component is to save time, headaches, and cost. That's why
Graphics Server does not require these licenses - you can purchase Graphics
Server with no server license worries.
Many of the other graphing components on the market require some form of server
licenses:
-
ChartFx
-
TeeChart
-
Dundas
-
Infragistics
-
ComponentOne

Competitor License requirements page on the Graphics Server Web site
